Possession Pressure
The possession pressure exercise is a very effective way to quickly improve your players decision making under pressure, something which is crucial for games.
You can change the size and shape of the space, as well as the touch limitations to give it endless variety.
The space is 12×18 yards and the setup is 4v4 with one neutral player who plays with the team in possession, so 9 players taking part. You can adjust the numbers or rotate other players into the exercise after each game or segment.
You can make it very competitive by giving players a target number of passes to reach without the other team touching the ball. Eight passes is a good target but adjust this based on the level of your team to make it achievable.
The basic idea is that you have a lot of players in a small space, making it very difficult to keep possession and forcing players to think very quickly in terms of decision making. The reason this exercise is so beneficial is because it maximizes three things; touches, pressure and decision making.
Push your players to play at high intensity; they don’t need to run very far but the exercise is mentally very taxing because players are constantly thinking about where to move and pass.
The one touch option is very challenging but it’s hugely beneficial in terms of player engagement and quick thinking.
The 3v3 option gives players a bit more time and space but there is an even bigger emphasis on players staying engaged and involved because they have less passing options.
In terms of the shape, although this is a rectangle, you can use a circle or an irregular shape for variety and challenge.
You should aim for around 4 minutes per game as this allows players to maintain their focus and intensity while also challenging them physically and mentally.
The final example is a 2v2 option and this is very difficult as players have fewer passing options so they have to stay fully engaged and constantly moving.
Your players will absolutely love this exercise and it is one that you should do regularly during your training sessions.
