6v6+1 Small Sided Game
This 6v6+1 Small Sided Game can be adapted for any number of players and it will massively benefit your team if you utilize all of the variations and focus on intensity and quality.
The size and shape of the space can be adjusted, along with the touch limitations and even the number of neutral players. There really is so much variety to this setup so your players can be constantly challenged.
This space is 20×20 yards and the setup is 6v6 with one neutral player who plays with the team in possession, so 13 players taking part. Again, you can adjust the numbers or rotate other players into the exercise after each game or segment.
A great way to ensure variety and consistent challenge is to play in 4-minute segments and change the conditions each time. Begin with no restrictions, then for the next segment introduce 2-touch passing, followed by another segment where players can only score goals with one touch. Given that around 70% of goals inside the penalty area are scored with just one touch, this is worth working on, both in small sided games and larger areas.
Again, this is what you can change:
- The size of the space. Smaller is more compact so less time and space for players. Bigger means more time and space.
- The shape of the space. Making a diamond instead of a rectangle for example; this forces players to play more centrally as the width is cut off.
- The number of neutrals. If you have multiple neutral players, the team in possession has a much bigger numerical advantage when they have the ball. Equally, the team not in possession has more difficulty trying to get it back.
- Number of touches. No restrictions is free, open play while 2-touch forces players to think and pass quicker but it means they can’t dribble. 1-touch is all about rapid decision making and constant movement.
Why should you play a small sided game if you have more space and can play a bigger game? Well, small sided games increase the number of touches and decisions for your players, as well as increasing the pressure they are put under. That’s why small sided games are used regularly by professional teams in training.
Push your players to play at high intensity both with and without the ball so that at the end of each 4 minute segment, they are physically and mentally tired.
The variety and challenge of this small-sided game setup will make it one of your players favorite exercises during training sessions.
Are your players looking for better quality, easy to slide in mini shin guards?
