3v3+3 Hexagonal Rondo
The 3v3+3 Hexagonal Rondo is very competitive and focuses on improving triangular combination play, something which is hugely important in games.
You can run this exercise with 10 or 12 players but in this video the example is with 12 players. If you have more than 12, they can be rotated in and out at the end of each segment or game.
There are 2 teams of 6 players in different colors. 3 players from each team are on the outside of the hexagon and the other 3 are in the middle.
You need 6 bibs or cones to mark the area and you should start with an area that has 7 yards between each marker, with the area being a hexagon shape. You can vary the size up to 10 yards between each marker; obviously as it gets bigger, players have more time and space.
The idea is to use combination play to keep possession. The players on the outside stay there for the duration of each game and the players in the middle do the same. Players can pass to anyone on their team, so the game is basically 6v3 when your team are in possession. The players inside the hexagon can tackle the players on the outside but the players on the outside cannot come into the hexagon area, they have to stay on the outside.
Keep the length of each game or segment short; around 4 minutes and push your players to play with real intensity and quality.
At the end of each game or segment of play, you can switch the inside and outside players.
You can start without touch restrictions and then introduce 2-touch as an option. The 2-touch version is my favorite as you get a good combination of one and two touch play and the general level of the game is fast. 1-touch is a great test for more advanced players or once your team have the 2-touch option down.
If you want to make it more competitive, you can put a set number of passes as a target. If a team makes 8 consecutive passes for example without the other team touching the ball, they win the game and the outside players can switch for the losing team.
This is a fantastic rondo which forces players to think and pass very quickly and the transfer to games makes it well worth doing this exercise regularly with your team.
Do you need good quality bibs/pinnies that are durable and comfortable?
